M. Victoria García Serrano

M. Victoria García Serrano (Conquista de la Sierra, Spain) studied Hispanic Philology-Linguistics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She received her PhD in Contemporary Latin American Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her areas of research are literary theory and writing by Hispanic women authors.

Annette Grant Cash

Annette Grant Cash teaches Spanish at Georgia State University where she is also the Director of the Translation and Interpretation Program. Her BA and MA degrees are in Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her PhD is in Romance Linguistics from The Ohio State University.

Cristina de la Torre

Cristina de la Torre was born in Cuba and moved to the United States as a child. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, Florida, and her Ph.D. in Spanish from Emory University. She spent several years in Madrid, Spain, where she was inspired to begin her dual career as professor of Spanish and literary translator.

  • Incorporation of four authentic short films to better develop the thematic units: Unidad I: “Minería contaminante a cielo abierto en Colombia”; Unidad II: “Un juego absurdo”; Unidad III: “Zepo”; Unidad IV: “Perú, Nebraska”
  • Two vocabulary sections introduce each lesson. “Palabra por palabra” highlights frequently used Spanish words that appear in the reading. “Mejor dicho” examines false cognates and other problem words. Sequentially placed, these sections facilitate vocabulary acquisition and practice before students begin the actual reading.
  • Found before every reading selection, the “¡Alto!” section of ¡A QUE SÍ! features techniques for improving reading skills, taps previous background knowledge, and at times examines specific grammatical items.
  • “Estrategias comunicativas” contains colloquial words and phrases. The goal of this section is to help students express themselves in everyday situations, such as asking for opinions and directions, agreeing and disagreeing, and expressing emotions such as surprise and gratitude.
  • Each reading is accompanied by pre-reading and post-reading activities, which help students think and speak critically about the issues presented.
  • The readings in ¡A QUE SÍ! have been chosen from a variety of sources: literature, newspapers, magazines, comic strips, advertisements, songs, blogs, and films. Spain and many Latin American countries are represented, as are male and female writers and a few of the different ethnic groups that comprise Hispanic culture. The strong human interest component of the reading helps foster lively exchanges and a stimulating classroom environment.
