Contemporary Precalculus: A Graphing Approach 5th Edition by Thomas W. Hungerford/Douglas J. Shaw

Overview

Respected for its detailed guidance in using technology, CONTEMPORARY PRECALCULUS: A GRAPHING APPROACH, Fifth Edition, is written from the ground up to be used with graphing technology--particularly graphing calculators. The text has also long been recognized for its careful, thorough explanations and its presentation of mathematics in an informal yet mathematically precise manner. The graphing approach is supported by realistic applications, including many using real data and numerous new ones. Thomas W. Hungerford and new coauthor Douglas J. Shaw also include a greater emphasis than many texts on the "why?" of mathematics--which is addressed in both the exposition and in the exercise sets by focusing on algebraic, graphical, and numerical perspectives.

Thomas W. Hungerford

Thomas W. Hungerford received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has taught at the University of Washington and at Cleveland State University, and is now at St. Louis University. His research fields are algebra and mathematics education. He is the author of many notable books for undergraduate and graduate level courses. In addition to ABSTRACT ALGEBRA: AN INTRODUCTION, these include: ALGEBRA (Springer, Graduate Texts in Mathematics, #73. 1974); MATHEMATICS WITH APPLICATIONS, Tenth Edition (Pearson, 2011; with M. Lial and J. Holcomb); and CONTEMPORARY PRECALCULUS, Fifth Edition (Cengage, 2009; with D. Shaw).

Douglas J. Shaw

Douglas Shaw received his M.S. from the University of Illinois and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He was a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota, and is currently at the University of Northern Iowa. His research is in combinatorics, number theory, and tertiary mathematics education. He has written instructor's guides for Brooks/Cole and worked on many other ancillaries as well. When he took Abstract Algebra in graduate school, he used one of Thomas Hungerford's texts and never sold it back to the bookstore.
  • More than 20 percent of the exercises are new, and every exercise retained from the previous edition has been examined for accuracy and appropriateness. To maintain topical relevance, data has been researched and updated.
  • New Section Objectives list the skills students should master by working through the material, thereby simplifying lesson planning for instructors.
  • In addition to Chapter Review exercises, each chapter now has a Chapter Test (in two parts for longer chapters), with answers for both odd and even questions in the answer section.
  • Formerly placed at the end of selected sections in the early chapters, Calculator Investigations (which encourage students to become familiar with the capabilities and limitations of graphing calculators) are now integrated into the exercise sets for those sections.
  • Also new to this edition is Enhanced WebAssign, a proven homework management system that allows you to assign, collect, grade, and record homework assignments easily via the Web.
  • CONTEMPORARY PRECALCULUS: A GRAPHING APPROACH, Fifth Edition, is written from the ground up as a graphing calculator book, making it easier to assign "real" problems.
  • The book includes material on limits and continuity, not always found in precalculus texts but desired by many instructors who intend to prepare their students for calculus.
  • Presentation of data analysis is integrated throughout, with a focus on algebraic, graphical, and numerical perspectives.
  • Guidance on technology usage (i.e., working with a graphing calculator) is placed throughout the text where appropriate.
