  • The Eleventh Edition includes new and updated material on relevant issues and events related to marriages and families. You'll find new data for marriage rates and birth rates by race, recent data on the characteristics of single families, and social and demographic characteristics of families by race. Other updates include discussion of same-sex marriage laws, new references on the benefits of marriage, and new research on arranged marriages.
  • New research has been added on the pressure men feel as they balance economic expectations with parenting responsibilities, how parents influence gender role expectations for their children, how people can learn new communication skills, and how people's expectations of how a conversation will end influences communication patterns.
  • Chapter 5, "Communications in Intimate Relationships," now discusses the demand-withdraw pattern as a common communication problem and includes a new section on how social media influence communication.
  • Chapter 6, "Dating, Single Life, and Mate Selection," includes new research on adolescent romance, hanging out, and hooking up as well as new data on cohabitation rates, interracial marriages, and teenage pregnancy. The chapter also discusses the changing relationship between education and age at marriage, and the recent declines in adolescent sexual activity.
  • An expanded discussion of voluntary childlessness as well as new information on trends related to artificial insemination and sperm donors have been added. Data on global fertility rates, teen fertility rates, multiple births, and abortion rates is updated.
  • Each chapter starts with an outline that gives students an overview of the material to come, followed by a series of thought-provoking questions for them to ponder as they read.
  • Highlight boxes supply interesting detail and add variety to the reading. Topics include why we avoid intimacy, ways that men and women can strengthen their communication, diversity in child-rearing values and practice, and "how to ruin a remarriage."
  • What Research Tells Us boxes serve as a reminder of the quantity of scientific research that informs our knowledge about intimate relationships, marriage, and the family.
  • Making Decisions boxes are short exercises designed to help students gain insight into such topics as their attitudes toward love, marriage, and the handling of finances.
  • What Do You Think? boxes in the text margins prompt students to think about their personal stance on the topic at hand.
  • End-of-chapter Debating the Issues sections present both sides of a controversial issue involving families, prompting lively and thought-provoking discussions of such questions as "Can we create gender-neutral children?", "Is marriage a dying institution?", and "Should parents stay home to rear their children?"
  • Families Around the World photo essays help bring global families into focus, helping students to gain a clearer picture of the diversity of family life.
  • Bolded key terms, a running glossary, and point-by-point chapter summaries assist students in study and review.
