Landscaping: Principles & Practices 8th Edition by Jack E. Ingels/Alissa F. Smith

Overview

LANDSCAPING PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES, Eighth Edition, provides a solid foundation in three areas of modern professional practice: landscape design, contracting and management. Updated to reflect today’s industry, the text includes new information, new practical learning features, and all-new photos and illustrations. Coverage begins with an overview of landscape design principles and processes, and then explores contracting, installation, maintenance, and professional specialization. The text also features expanded information on the National FFA Organization and content aligned to the Precision Exam for Landscape Management, making it easier to connect classroom work to current industry needs, standards, and certifications.

Jack E. Ingels

Jack E. Ingels is a distinguished professor in the department of plant science at the State University of New York at Cobleskill. He is a member of the Associated Landscape Contractors of America and was named one of the top ten landscape educators in America by Lawn and Landscape magazine. Mr. Ingles has written numerous publications about ornamental horticulture.

Alissa F. Smith

Alissa F. Smith is the associate executive director of the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE), where she oversees professional development for agricultural educators at a national level. Prior to working at NAAE, Alissa was a classroom agriculture teacher in Central Kentucky, where she specialized in teaching horticulture and agriscience. She also developed curriculum and instructional material for high school agriculture classes, including landscaping and landscape design, greenhouse technology, and floriculture and floral design. In addition, Alissa worked to develop agriscience curriculum and served on state committees to develop an agriscience pathway in Kentucky. She completed her undergraduate degree in agriculture at the University of Kentucky, holds a teaching certification in agriculture grades 5-12, and earned her master’s degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky.
  • The authors have reorganized coverage of topics to optimize learning and encourage mastery, beginning with an overview of essential landscape design principles and processes, and then proceeding to cover more advanced topics such as contracting, installation, maintenance, and professional specialization.
  • Newly revised content includes a discussion of social media and digital technology to highlight the ways these trends are affecting businesses and professionals in today’s industry.
  • Content aligns to the Precision Exam for Landscape Management, drawing clear connections between knowledge and skills honed in the classroom and current industry needs, standards, and certifications.
  • Knowledge and Skill Builder sidebars offer practical advice to help students master key concepts and develop important skills, as well as gaining valuable knowledge of real-world business practices.
  • Suggested Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) activities are ideal for students in agricultural education programs, as well as those interested in suggestions on how to get started in the industry.
  • All-new visuals--including updated page layouts, current photos, and abundant illustrations--help bring chapter content to life, make the text even more reader-friendly, and engage today’s visual learners.
  • This highly practical text is designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills they need for career success as working professionals, including a strong foundation in landscape design, contracting, and management.
  • Rigorous review questions and engaging activities in each chapter allow students to assess their understanding of the material and practice applying their knowledge while developing important new skills.
  • The authors strongly emphasize safety in the workplace, and a dedicated chapter highlights government safety regulations, specific safety concerns related to the industry, and current best practices to mitigate hazards while on the job.
  • Extensive Appendices offer additional practical reinforcement by providing a catalog of plant diseases and injuries, sample projects and case studies, and a listing of industry professional and trade organizations.
