Katherine Van Wormer

Dr. Katherine Van Wormer, MSSW, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita of Social Work. She has taught in departments of sociology, social work and criminal justice and has over 20 years of experience in teaching and public service. Dr. Van Wormer was actively involved in the historic civil rights movements in North Carolina and Northern Ireland. She practiced substance misuse counseling for four and a half years, including two in Norway. Dr. Van Wormer has been publishing texts, book chapters and articles for over twenty years. In addition to ADDICTION TREATMENT: A STRENGTHS PERSPECTIVE, she has recently co-authored WOMEN AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, SOCIAL WELFARE POLICY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE, and earlier, THE MAID NARRATIVES and numerous other books, including one on the nature of oppression and one as a co-editor on restorative justice. She has received several honors, including the McKay Faculty Research Award from the University of Northern Iowa and a distinguished service award from the human rights commission in Iowa.

Diane Rae Davis

Diane Rae Davis, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus in the School of Social Work and Human Services at Eastern Washington University. She has taught a variety of substance misuse and practice courses in the MSW program and has researched and written extensively on addiction and the recovery process. In addition to ADDICTION TREATMENT: A STRENGTHS PERSPECTIVE, she has published TAKING BACK YOUR LIFE: WOMEN AND PROBLEM GAMBLING.

  • The two public health crises -- the COVID-19 pandemic and the enormous opioid overdose death toll -- have ushered in new understandings about the role of major life stresses in the development of addictive behavior. A major theme of the book is a paradigm shift in the conceptualization of substance misuse as a public health crisis and should enrich class discussions given the historic implications.
  • The text has been updated throughout with content from the DSM-5-TR and information on international substance misuse from the World Health Organization. Updates include classification of pathological gambling from its Impulse Control Disorder category to a new category called Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders.
  • The chapter on the biology of addiction is now split into two chapters. Chapter 3 now focuses on alcohol and alcohol use disorder, while Chapter 4 now focuses on drugs of addiction and other drugs of misuse as well as containing detailed descriptions of widely used medications for substance use disorders to curb craving and save lives.
  • The chapter on mutual help, now titled "Mutual Help and Spiritual/Religious Resources," includes the latest research validating the effectiveness of the 12-step model for treatment and the proliferation of online mutual help resources online as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Chapter 8, "Strengths- and Evidence-Based Helping Strategies," is updated to reflect the growing acceptance of harm reduction and strengths-based strategies such as motivational interviewing.

  • Recent survey data from national and international sources pertaining to alcohol and other drug misuse among young people are incorporated throughout the text, with breakdowns given by age and racial/ethnic background. Much of the material is drawn from recent government survey data pertaining to matters of interest to college students such as gambling, sports betting, eating disorders and binge drinking, from school and national health surveys relating to young adults on the basis of ethnicity and race.
  • Unique to this text is the theme of stress, including trauma and its interrelationship with the use of psychoactive substances. Among the stress variables discussed are the social isolation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, living in a high-crime or impoverished neighborhood, historical trauma of Indigenous populations and discrimination against LGBTQ people.
  • Students learn about client-centered approaches such as a strengths perspective and motivational interviewing, which fall under the rubric of the harm reduction model. The authors believe that these evidence-based approaches best prepare students for working in the field of substance use disorder treatment today.
