Basic College Mathematics: An Applied Approach 1st Edition by Richard N. Aufmann/Joanne S. Lockwood/Rebecca Milburn

Overview

The First Canadian Edition of BASIC COLLEGE MATHEMATICS engages students through real-world, Canadian examples and problems, while maintaining and building on the pedagogical strengths of the Aufmann series. Practice is a key to success in developmental mathematics and each feature within this title focuses on student mastery of concepts. All lessons, exercise sets, problems, and supplements are organized around a carefully constructed hierarchy of objectives; each exercise mirrors a preceding objective, which helps to reinforce key concepts and promote skill building. In addition to Canadian and international word problems and examples, this edition makes math skills more relevant to Canadian students through a chapter on the metric system and supports the unique blend of the metric system and Imperial System used in Canada.

  • Canadian and international problems and examples provide relatable models for students.
  • “In the News” feature highlights Canadian examples of how mathematics concepts apply in the “real-world.”
  • Chapters merge the Imperial System of measurement and the metric system to reflect Canada’s unique mix of the two systems.
  • Increased coverage of BEDMAS, very large and very small numbers in measurement, scientific notation, and two-step algebra problems.
  • The Example/You Try It matched pairs are designed to actively involve students in learning the techniques presented. The You Try Its are based on the Examples. They are paired to easily refer students to the steps in the Examples as they work through the You Try Its.
  • Concept Check exercises promote conceptual understanding. Completing these exercises will deepen a student's understanding of the concepts being addressed and provide the foundation they need to successfully complete the remaining exercises in the exercise set.
  • Critical Thinking exercises in each exercise set require students to synthesize the skills learned in that section.
  • Check Your Progress exercises appear approximately mid-chapter and test student understanding of the concepts presented thus far.
  • Cengage Learning’s Enhanced WebAssign is the world's easiest-to-use homework system for math and science, providing the definitive solution to your homework and assessment needs.
