Cognitive Psychology: Connecting Mind, Research, and Everyday Experience 5th Edition by E. Bruce Goldstein

Overview

Connecting the study of cognition to everyday life, E. Bruce Goldstein's COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY: CONNECTING MIND, RESEARCH, AND EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE, 5th Edition, gives equal treatment to both the landmark studies and the cutting-edge research that define this fascinating field. Concrete examples and illustrations help students understand the theories of cognition--driving home both the scientific importance of the theories and their relevance to students' daily lives. Goldstein's accessible narrative style blends with an art program that makes difficult concepts understandable. Students gain a true understanding of the "behind the scenes" activity that happens in the mind when humans do such seemingly simple activities as perceive, remember or think. Goldstein also focuses on the behavioral and physiological approaches to cognition by including physiological materials in every chapter.

E. Bruce Goldstein

E. Bruce Goldstein is Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona. He has received the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh for his classroom teaching and textbook writing. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University and his PhD in Experimental Psychology from Brown University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Biology Department at Harvard University before joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. Bruce published papers on a wide variety of topics, including retinal and cortical physiology, visual attention and the perception of pictures before focusing exclusively on teaching (Sensation & Perception, Cognitive Psychology, Psychology of Art, Introductory Psychology) and writing textbooks. He is the co-author of, Sensation and Perception, 11th edition (Cengage, 2021) and edited the Blackwell Handbook of Perception (Blackwell, 2001) and the two-volume Sage Encyclopedia of Perception (Sage, 2010). In 2016, he won “The Flame Challenge” competition, sponsored by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, for his essay, written for 11-year-olds, on What Is Sound?
  • New demonstrations and interactions in MindTap give students a greater understanding of cognitive phenomenon. Students can participate in mini experiments with animations, videos, and interactives.
  • CogLab is now easier to use through MindTap with seamless sign-on capabilities, avoiding the need for extra codes.
  • MindTap also includes more questions per chapter to test basic understanding, in addition to the popular MasteryTraining distributed practice learning tool.
  • Updated material in the text presents the latest research in Cognitive Psychology. Notable revised content covers mirror neurons as well as recent research on networks, including the default mode network, structural and functional connectivity and connections between procedural and semantic memory. Goldstein also presents new "brain decoding" research.
  • The book is accessible and clear, making complex studies and concepts easy for students to understand. A new example in the attention chapter discusses the dynamic nature of neural networks. Goldstein draws an analogy between observations of changes in traffic flow by a helicopter hovering over a city and changes in the effective connectivity of neural networks in response to changing demands of a situation.
  • The text emphasizes themes such as the challenge of determining what's happening in the mind when the mind can't be measured directly; the importance of inference and prediction across different areas, such as perception, attention, memory, language and thinking; and how technological advances have helped expand our understanding in all areas of Cognitive Psychology.
  • The text connects cognitive research and everyday life. Some new examples: recent research on the effect of distraction caused by cell phones, the internet and mind wandering (Ch. 4 on attention); comparing note taking by hand and by laptop (Ch. 7 on long-term memory); using music to retrieve memories in Alzheimer's patients, connections between music and language (Ch. 8 on everyday memory and Ch. 11 on language); and how erroneous thinking can lead to incorrect conclusions, with a nod to illusions of memory, reasoning errors and fake news (Ch. 8 on everyday memory and Ch. 13 on reasoning).
  • Goldstein presents a balance of cutting-edge research and classic studies. To keep the book both compelling and scholarly, he carefully selects research that best illustrates his point and then conveys it in a student-friendly style.
  • "Demonstrations" features offer illustrative exercises that show students exactly how cognition works.
  • "Test Yourself" questions, which appear in the middle and at the end of each chapter, are designed to get students to recall and review the information they've just read.
  • "Think About It" features at the end of each chapter use questions and doable projects to take students beyond the text material.
  • CogLab 5.0 - The COGLAB online laboratory offers students an experiential way to improve their understanding of cognitive psychology. COGLAB clarifies key concepts by allowing students to participate in a variety of classic and current experiments--and discover how the mind works. Participating in these activities will help students understand each experiment, its data, its underlying cognitive concepts, and its significance to the field of psychology.
  • Mastery Training - Built on the science of distributed practice, his adaptive learning engine presents concepts to students, and adapts to each student’s performance helping them learn more efficiently, and master core concepts.
  • Explorations - Students explore, watch and respond to videos, demos, animations, and interviews to expand their understanding of key chapter concepts.
