Tomlinson/Boose's CURREN'S MATH FOR MEDS: DOSAGES AND SOLUTIONS, 12e, covers basic math concepts and systems of measurement for dosage calculation. Careful attention to practices encouraging safety in medication preparation, calculation and administration are outlined. Three common methods of dosage calculation are introduced. Gladdi Tomlinson, RN, MSN

Gladdi Tomlinson and Lou Ann Boose have taught together for more than 30 years in various levels of the nursing program at Harrisburg Area Community College. During those 30 years, both were involved in creating first- and second-level dosage calculation courses, as well as teaching the courses in the classroom and online. Both Gladdi and Lou Ann have decades of clinical experience, including areas of medical/surgical, orthopedics, oncology and gerontology. Gladdi retired in 2014 and remains an adjunct professor at the college. Lou Ann retired in 2020 after achieving senior professor status and remains an adjunct professor at the college. Both remain committed and dedicated to fostering a sense of confidence in students related to dosage calculation and instilling the value of practicing safely in the clinical setting.

  • Presentation with an organized approach: Medication safety is presented as a foundation for safe practice in the clinical setting. There is a strong focus on reading and interpreting the information on medication labels used in the chapters related to dosage calculation methods. Three commonly used dosage calculation methods are introduced before the student has to apply them to oral and parenteral dosage calculations. The examples encourage students to do practice problems using the method they are most comfortable with. Advanced dosage calculations are found at the end of the book.
  • Multitude of examples, practice problems and end-of-chapter questions: Chapters present several examples of concepts for the student. The student is also presented with several practice problem sets throughout each chapter. At the conclusion of each chapter there are summary tests that integrate all the concepts presented in the chapter, including NCLEX-style questions introduced at the end of several chapters. Labels are used with many of the examples and practice problems so students become familiar with the information and gain confidence using the information as they calculate dosages.
  • Clinical Applications: A multitude of medication labels, syringes and examples expressed in multiple systems of measurement (metric, unit and mEq) used in current clinical settings are used throughout the book. A statement on clinical relevance is included in most chapters to aid the student in identifying the relationship of the content to the clinical setting. The chapters also integrate the importance of clinical judgement and critical-thinking in the practice setting.
