Database Systems: Design, Implementation, & Management 13th Edition by Carlos Coronel/Steven Morris

Overview

Provide a balanced approach to databases as the market-leading DATABASE SYSTEMS: DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, and MANAGEMENT, 13E emphasizes the knowledge and skills necessary for success and makes databases accessible without overwhelming students. Readers gain a solid foundation in database design and implementation as diagrams, illustrations, and tables clarify in-depth coverage of database design. Students learn how successful database implementation involves designing databases to fit within a larger strategic data environment. Revised coverage of SQL introduces more examples and simpler explanations that focus on areas most important for a database career -- making supplementary SQL materials unnecessary. Additional coverage of Big Data Analytics and NoSQL, including related Hadoop technologies, offers a strong hands-on approach. MindTap now include a digital auto-graded MySQL environment.

  • MINDTAP® FOR DATABASE SYSTEMS OFFERS AN ONLINE, PERSONALIZED LEARNING EXPERIENCE WITH AUTO-GRADED MySQL LABS. MindTap® combines readings, multimedia activities, and assessments into a learning path that guides students through your course. You’ll find a full e-book as well as auto-gradable homework problems. End-of-chapter SQL problems can be completed and graded automatically in a completely online environment. Homework questions confirm students’ understanding of concepts and key terms while advanced assignments enable students to practice database design concepts.
  • IN MAY 2020, A COMPLETELY REDESIGNED MINDTAPV2.0 WILL BE AVAILABLE with loads of new features including How it Works in MySQL user notes to complement the existing coverage of Oracle SQL and Microsoft SQL Server, new auto-graded mySQL labs and coding snippets created to give students step-by-step practice in mySQL, additional UseIt! Activities (formerly known as Critical Thinking exercises), various types of Quick Lesson videos including Concept Clips, How-To and Career videos, and revised Appendices, with new coverage of Visio 2019 and LucidChart.
  • REVISED HANDS-ON FOCUS ON BIG DATA TOOLS AND NOSQL DATABASES PREPARES STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS EMPLOYERS WANT. Students remain on the leading edge of database concepts as they become familiar with emerging tools, such as Big Data Analytics. This edition examines traditional and digital sources inside and outside of the company for ongoing discovery and analysis. Students also study NoSQL databases that are designed for fast storage and retrieval of data without strictly using the tabular structure of relational databases.
  • NEW TOPICS ENSURE YOUR COURSE COVERS THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD. This edition’s expanded coverage addresses Big Data, NoSQL, and Hadoop technologies, as well as other topics reshaping today’s approach to database systems.
  • REVISED, REORGANIZED FOCUSED COVERAGE OF SQL. The 13th edition reorganizes coverage of SQL to focus first on data retrieval since this is the most central SQL programming skill for entry-level database positions. Restructured coverage now includes more examples and simplified explanations that eliminate the need for supplemental SQL programming books.
  • ENHANCED COVERAGE ADDRESSES TODAY’S MOST COMMONLY USED DATABASE SYSTEMS. To provide students with a breadth of understanding of database design and programming across a range of DBMS products, this edition now introduces all of today’s most commonly used database systems, including Oracle®, MySQL™, SQL Server, and Microsoft® Access.
  • REVIEW QUESTIONS, PROBLEM SETS, AND CASES CHECK STUDENTS’ COMPREHENSION OF KEY CONCEPTS. A variety of review questions, cases, and problem sets throughout this edition provide multiple opportunities for students to apply concepts, examine applications, and test their understanding of chapter material.
  • MEANINGFUL VISUALS CLARIFY CONCEPTS. This book’s full-color, detailed illustrations, tables, and diagrams enhance student comprehension and facilitate understanding of more complex concepts.
  • STUDENTS WORK WITH MULTIPLE DATABASES IN VARIOUS FORMATS. This edition introduces and provides opportunities for readers to gain experience in implementation using all of today’s most commonly used database systems, including Microsoft® Access, Microsoft® SQL Server, MySQL™, and Oracle® databases.
  • CLEAR PRESENTATION BALANCES THEORY AND PRACTICE. This book’s straightforward writing style offers an outstanding and understandable blend of foundational theory and today’s latest practices and applications with an emphasis on key hands-on skills.
  • FULL SET OF TEACHING SUPPORT PROVIDES TIME-SAVING RESOURCES AND ONLINE TOOLS. This edition includes PowerPoint® presentation slides, MS Access databases, Oracle®, MySQL™ and SQL Server scripts, test banks, and digital interactive student exercises that provide flashcards and other study tools.
