Discovering Psychology 2nd Edition by John T. Cacioppo/Ashley Waggoner Denton

Overview

Discovering Psychology: The Science of the Mind offers a fresh, integrative approach to understanding human behaviour and mental processes. Moving beyond traditional, fragmented perspectives, this textbook emphasizes psychology as a multidisciplinary science, connecting insights from medicine, business, education, and law. Inspired by the functionalist vision of pioneers like William James, the text explores not only what people do, but why they do it — revealing the goals and functions behind behaviour. Each chapter highlights the scientific study of the mind, weaving together rigorous research, clear explanations, vivid examples, and engaging visuals to create a comprehensive learning experience. Designed for introductory psychology courses, this edition provides a unified framework that fosters lifelong understanding of human behaviour and its intersections with other disciplines. By integrating diverse perspectives and emphasizing the science behind competing theories, Discovering Psychology equips learners to think critically about the mind and appreciate the difference between everyday assumptions and scientific inquiry.

This edition is available in MindTap — an online learning platform that helps you stay organized and study effectively by providing all your course materials and study tools in one place. Along with additional course content, MindTap lets you highlight, take notes, create flashcards, and more.
