Overview

The Second Canadian Edition of Adult Development and Aging takes a “successful aging” perspective to approach topics related to the aging individual within Canadian society. The text explores psychological theory of aging with an emphasis on research being done in Canada, which is highlighted in the How Do We Know? feature boxes in each chapter. Beyond theory, the text considers the experience of aging for older adults in Canada today, especially the baby boom generation who are entering older adulthood and who will all be older adults by 2030. This demographic shift has important implications globally, but also brings unique challenges and opportunities within a Canadian context.

This Canadian textbook provides in-depth coverage of the major issues in the psychology of adult development and aging from a Canadian perspective and considers how Canada’s diverse population is affected by issues related to aging such as health and healthcare, longevity, relationships, work, housing, and end of life issues that are unique to this country.

Each chapter has been thoroughly reviewed and updated to reflect current demographic changes in Canada using up-to-date data from the 2021 Canadian census. Topics reflect the diverse experiences in Canada, including Indigenous peoples, racialized individuals, and immigrants. Throughout the text, particular attention has been paid to the effects of COVID-19 and the effects of various types of discrimination and bias on the experience of adult development and aging. John C. Cavanaugh

John C. Cavanaugh is Senior Consultant at Pathseekers II, Inc. He is former president and CEO of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, Chancellor Emeritus of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, and former president of the University of West Florida. A researcher and teacher of adult development and aging for more four decades, he has published about 100 articles and chapters and authored, coauthored, or coedited 24 books on aging, information technology, and higher education policy. He is a past president of Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging) of the American Psychological Association (APA) and is a fellow of APA (Divisions 1, 2, 3, and 20) and the Gerontological Society of America, and a charter fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. He has held numerous leadership positions in these associations, including chair of the Committee on Aging for APA. He has served on numerous state and national committees for aging-related and higher education organizations. He also serves on the Yellowstone Forever National Advisory Council. John is a devoted fan of “Star Trek” and a serious traveler, photographer, backpacker, cook, and chocoholic. He is married to Dr. Christine K. Cavanaugh, with whom he writes, co-teaches, and learns something new each day.

Christine Burton

Christine Burton is a lecturer of psychology at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include age-related changes in reading comprehension and the factors contributing to the maintenance of high cognitive abilities among older adults. Her research has been published in Discourse Processes, Reading Psychology, and the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society. A devoted educator, Christine has taught a wide range of courses including Psychology of Aging, Introduction to Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Development, and Human Neuropsychology. Christine is committed to academic excellence and uses innovative classroom strategies to engage and connect with students. She also explores the integration of technology in education, striving to enhance student participation, particularly in large class settings. Christine is also committed to undergraduate mentorship. Serving as an editor for undergraduate student journals, faculty advisor for student organizations, and supervisor for undergraduate research initiatives, she provides guidance and support to aspiring scholars. Christine received her Ph.D. in experimental cognitive psychology from the University of Toronto.
