Interaction: Langue et culture (Book Only) 9th Edition by Susan St. Onge/Ronald St. Onge/Scott Powers

Overview

Interaction continues to be a complete program offering unparalleled support for the study of culture, literature, and language at the intermediate level. This edition offers a broad range of cultural and literary content, and concise, yet thorough grammar explanations. Interaction combines the best of a complete grammar text and a literary and cultural reader in a convenient, one-book format. Each theme-based chapter encourages students to expand linguistic and cultural knowledge through readings and communicative activities.

Susan St. Onge

Susan St. Onge is a distinguished professor of French at Christopher Newport University. In addition to INTERACTION, Susan and Ronald St. Onge are co-authors of LA CIVILISATION FRANÇAISE EN ÉVOLUTION, Volumes I and II.

Ronald St. Onge

Ronald St. Onge, a native French speaker, is Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the College of William and Mary. Both Ron and Susan are visible figures in the language community, well-respected for their successful and effective textbooks and their dedication to students. Ron is praised for his exceptional selection of cultural and literary readings for INTERACTION, while Susan’s grammatical explanations have been lauded as “practical and concise.”

Scott Powers

Scott Powers is an associate professor of French at the University of Mary Washington. Scott has authored several articles on the writings of Baudelaire, Zola, Céline, and Beigbeder, as well as on methods of teaching culture and business French. He also has edited the volume EVIL IN CONTEMPORARY FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE LITERATURE and is preparing a monograph on secularization in modern French literature.
  • New segments on the French-speaking world are included in the chapter-opening culture sections in many chapters. Several of the "Notes culturelles" have been revised to link the chapter theme to manifestations of Francophone culture beyond France. The connection of these sections to the chapter theme highlights the presence and influence of Francophone culture in areas around the world, including the United States, and serves to showcase French as a global language.
  • Within the culture sections, the more traditional comprehension activities have been replaced by two new activities, "Langue et culture" and "Jeux de mots." "Langue et culture" serves to introduce students to the structures of the unit or to recycle structures from previous units within a cultural context. In this feature, students are asked to demonstrate mastery of the cultural information while practicing language usage within proscribed parameters. "Jeux de mots" goes beyond simple verification of comprehension to work on building reading skills while enhancing students' passive vocabulary.
  • Award-winning court-métrage films now appear at the conclusion of each of the 10 chapters. These engaging films provide students with activities that foster listening and comprehension skills. The new "Activité video" feature gives students a visual glimpse into elements of Francophone culture. The accompanying activities help build listening skills and promote lively discussions in the classroom using a medium of high appeal to today's students.
  • The "Le Français connecté" feature, with its accompanying activities, "Connectez-vous," puts students in direct touch with Francophone culture in an interactive format designed to promote classroom discussion.
  • "Francophones en direct" offers recorded, unscripted interviews representing a wide range of ages, ethnic, and social backgrounds, and presents various perspectives on the chapters' themes. Each of these oral segments is accompanied by activities that facilitate more systematic development of listening skills.
  • A revised Student Activities Manual (SAM) has oral and written activities aligned with the content in the main text and progresses methodically from comprehension to expression. A new section called "Interaction cinéma: Pour aller plus loin" presents expansion activities for the court-métrage film featured in each chapter.
  • INTERACTION accommodates students of virtually every background and level of preparation. A complete, clear review provides all basic structures in French, enabling professors and students to immediately benefit from classroom activities that focus on using the language in contextualized situations. INTERACTION's grammar explanations ("Structures") are clear enough to be used communicatively in class or to be assigned outside of class for self-review.
  • The book's wide variety of activities gives instructors many opportunities to adapt classroom activities to their teaching styles and students' skill levels. Activities range from discrete point exercises to open-ended activities that allow students to use the language in realistic contexts.
  • Culture ("High C and low c") is disseminated throughout each chapter, enabling instructors to integrate culture into every class and providing lively units that are more easily assimilated by students.
  • A superb selection of readings, together with accompanying skills development activities, provides ample opportunity for students to enhance their reading skills without the need for additional texts/supplements. Readings have been carefully selected for level and content so that they enhance the cultural theme of each unit.
