  • "Communication in Everyday Life" features now include a new "Social Media" subcategory, helping readers effectively navigate an area rife with potential pitfalls. The former "Career" subcategory has been expanded and renamed "Workplace" to reflect the fact that not all work need be considered a "career." Other subcategories include "Diversity" and "Insight." Helping readers personalize what they learn, these features often conclude with a suggestion for applying the boxed material via reflection, action or visiting an online site, for which students can provide written responses in MindTap.
  • More expansive coverage of social media is integrated throughout. Every chapter includes a section that discusses connections between chapter themes and social media.
  • Chapter 2, Communication and Personal Identity, includes a new section on how we express, or perform, our identities. Highlighting our human ability to choose how to perform our identities, this insightful new material complements existing coverage of the ways in which others--and one's culture--shape identity.
  • Now more relevant to today's readers, Chapter 12, Communication in Families, helps students think about and effectively manage real-life issues that face--or will face--them and their families.
  • Reflecting the latest research and developments from the field of interpersonal communication, the new edition includes findings from more than 150 new sources.
  • An emphasis on cultural diversity is thoroughly woven throughout the new 9th Edition, equipping readers with the skills they need to effectively communicate with people who may not share a similar background.
  • Revised and reorganized, end-of-chapter features provide a logical learning sequence for all activities, building up to progressively more challenging levels of practice and application. The levels move from the simplest review in the "Chapter Summary" and "Key Concepts" to the most challenging application--"Thinking Critically."
  • The book's conversational and personal tone puts students at ease, helping them feel like they are full participants in the dialogue.
  • Built on a strengthened learning architecture based on skill building, application and critical thinking, the text's pedagogy is carefully integrated into MindTap's personalized teaching experience. Assignments guide students to analyze, apply and improve thinking, allowing instructors to measure skills and outcomes with ease. MindTap combines interactive videos and simulations with high-value gradable activities in an engaging, personalized online environment. MindTap is cued in the text where appropriate to remind students of their options for interactive applications.
  • Helping students maximize their study time, each chapter previews content with an easily reviewed set of Learning Objectives paired with a chapter outline. Each Learning Objective has been carefully matched with activities that will demonstrate its mastery.
  • Bringing chapter concepts to life, the photo program includes a wealth of images from popular media along with thought-provoking captions.
  • Offering additional viewpoints on chapter topics, commentaries by college students from across the nation highlight their personal experiences, insights and concerns--enlivening classroom discussions with a wide range of perspectives.
  • A stronger emphasis on ethical issues is included throughout the text, enabling students to think through a variety of ethical dilemmas before they confront them in real life.
  • End-of-chapter “Continuing the Conversation” provides a short video case study that picks up where the chapter left off by showing students how the theories and principles they just read about show up in everyday life.
  • “Assessing Yourself” quizzes in most chapters enable students to personally apply chapter concepts to their own lives.
