Cultural Anthropology: An Applied Perspective 1st Edition by Gary Ferraro/Susan Andreatta/Chris Holdsworth

Overview

CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY: AN APPLIED PERSPECTIVE, Canadian Edition, goes beyond providing a comprehensive overview of the discipline and fully integrates the application of the theories, insights, and methods of cultural anthropology to contemporary situations. The authors recognize that cultures—Canadian and abroad—are in a constant state of flux and are continually interacting with each other both locally and globally. To capture this dynamic and to enhance student learning and illustrate the relevance of cultural anthropology in our everyday lives, current topics include the growth of information technologies, innovations such as multi-sited field research, reflexive and intersubjective approaches, human relations with the environment, religious and political conflict, medical anthropology, climate change, international migration, urbanization, development, and business anthropology. Student engagement is reinforced with strong pedagogical features and themes that encourage readers to reflect and think critically about issues like community and social responsibility, economics, and the environment. MindTap, a fully online learning solution, combines all learning tools—readings, multimedia, activities, and assessments—into a single Learning Path that guides the student through the curriculum and brings anthropology to life!

Chris Holdsworth

Chris Holdsworth, Senior Instructor of Anthropology at the University of Calgary, received his BSc and MA in physical anthropology from the University of Toronto and his DPhil in social and cultural anthropology at the University of Oxford, England. After receiving his MA, a summer job as a dealer, pit boss, and assistant casino manager in Canada’s first casino in the Yukon put him on a career path in Canada’s fledgling gaming industry. He spent two years as a professional poker player before becoming a gaming consultant, a casino manager, and finally a regulator, working with British Columbia’s Solicitor General’s office to draft the operating procedures and financial controls presently used in all casinos in BC. He then returned to academia and, after receiving his DPhil for a thesis on the history and philosophy of anthropology, he taught at Goldsmith’s College, University of London. When he returned to Canada, he was hired as a product manager for a software development company in Calgary on the basis of his knowledge of anthropology, which he applied on a daily basis for several years. He also began teaching marketing research and consumer behaviour as a sessional for the University of Lethbridge and anthropology for the University of Calgary, where he now devotes his time to teaching. In addition to teaching Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology, he also teaches Business Anthropology, Economic Anthropology, the History of Anthropology, Language and Communication, Anthropology of Religion, and Contemporary Indigenous Issues in Canada. His four, twentysomething-year-old children keep him young and help him understand his students.
  • Carries on the legacy of its U.S. parent book with its applied approach, coverage of core concepts and principles, in-depth case studies of applied anthropology, cross-cultural miscues, and an easy-to-read style, all with examples reflecting the Canadian perspective.
  • Takes an anthropological perspective to issues facing Canada’s Indigenous peoples.
  • Contemporary Canadian and global examples illustrate the application of anthropological concepts and methods in the field, workplace, and in one’s personal life.
  • Cross-Cultural Miscue boxes demonstrate the misunderstandings and negative consequences of failing to understand cultural differences, and reflect the real-life experiences of anthropologists, business people, politicians, and others.
  • Applied Perspective boxes demonstrate how the methods and insights of cultural anthropology apply to the solution of specific societal and cultural problems and challenges. Questions for Further Thought in each box encourage students to think critically about the broader implications of the applied case.
  • Stories from the Field explore the experiences of fieldworkers as they come to a sudden understanding or realization of the value of anthropology or the role of culture.
  • Critical Thinking Questions at the end of each chapter encourage students to think about the material covered in the chapter as well as how to apply the knowledge in novel situations.
  • Real-life, chapter-opening case studies stimulate interest and illustrate the underlying theme of the chapter. In addition, they demonstrate the importance of culture and anthropology in understanding the world around us.
  • Additional chapter pedagogy includes What We Will Learn introductory statements that alert the student to the key concepts of the chapter, concise chapter summaries, a running glossary, a list of key terms, and a cumulative glossary to familiarize the student with anthropological concepts.
  • MindTap for Cultural Anthropology is a personalized teaching experience with engaging assignments that help students connect concepts to the real world. Critical thinking is encouraged through analysis, application, and reflection.
