Jason Eckert

Jason W. Eckert is an experienced technical trainer, consultant, and best-selling author in the information technology (IT) industry. With over three decades of IT experience, 48 industry certifications, four published apps, and 27 published textbooks covering topics such as UNIX, Linux, security, Windows Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, PowerShell, BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and video game development, Mr. Eckert brings his expertise to every class that he teaches at triOS College and to his role as the Dean of Technology. He was named the 2019 Outstanding Train-the-Trainer from the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) for his work providing Linux training to other educators.   • Providing hands-on practice as well as flexibility, project exercises in Chapter 2, Linux® Installation and Usage, allow students to install Fedora 28 within a virtual machine on Windows or choose to install Fedora 28 natively.
  • Continuing its focus on Linux server deployment, Chapter 6 now also covers server virtualization technologies and the considerations necessary for running Linux within a virtual machine environment.
  • In addition to detailed discussions of LVM and ZFS server storage technologies, Chapter 6 thoroughly examines BTRFS and SAN configuration.
  • Chapter 6 exercises now ask students to deploy Ubuntu Server 18.04 (no X) in another virtual machine on Windows (or alternatively within a virtual machine on Fedora 28). This hands-on application enables learners to practice managing a Linux server without a GUI, become comfortable applying concepts to different Linux distributions and gain experience using both the Debian Package Manager (Ubuntu Server) and Red Hat Package Manager (Fedora) in Chapter 11.
  • While Systemd has replaced SysV Init on modern Linux distributions, many legacy Linux systems remain widely used and CompTIA's Linux®+ (Powered by LPI) Certification exam still tests legacy concepts. As a result, Chapters 8, 10, 12 and 14 examine SysV Init and related services using an additional virtual machine running a legacy Linux distribution (Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS)--enabling students to easily separate legacy Linux features from modern ones within the classroom environment.
  • Package management coverage within Chapter 11, Compression, System Backup and Software Installation, has been updated to reflect current versions of apt (Debian Package Manager) and dnf (Red Hat Package Manager) as well as expanded to include a discussion of other package management tools such as zypper (ZYpp Package Manager).
  • Reflecting the latest developments from the field, the network services and security concepts detailed in Chapters 12-14 have been thoroughly updated and expanded with new coverage of current technologies and practices. In addition, Chapter 14 includes an all-new section on cloud services and containerization.
