Linux+ and LPIC-1 Guide to Linux Certification 6th Edition by Jason Eckert

Overview

Eckert's LINUX+ and LPIC-1 GUIDE TO LINUX CERTIFICATION, 6th EDITION, empowers learners with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed on CompTIA's Linux®+ (XKO-005) certification exam and the Linux Professional Institute LPIC-1 (101-500 and 102-500) certification exams, as well as in their information technology career. The book covers the latest Linux® distributions, as well as virtualization, containerization, cloud orchestration and enterprise storage. Comprehensive coverage also addresses key job-related services and cloud technologies, including firewalls, FTP, NFS, Samba, Apache, DNS, DHCP, NTP, Postfix, PostgreSQL, SSH, VNC, RDP, Docker and Kubernetes. Appendices allow learners to apply their Linux knowledge to macOS® and FreeBSD®. Hands-on projects give them practice using the latest Fedora™ and Ubuntu® Linux® distributions and can be performed on either a Windows® PC (Intel® or ARM®) or macOS® PC (Intel® or Apple® Silicon).

  • Chapter 1 (Introduction to Linux®) has been revamped to reflect current technologies and their uses, as well as virtualization and containers. A new Linux in the Cloud section has been added to introduce core cloud terminology, as well as discuss the role Linux plays within cloud environments and continuous deployment (CD) workflows.
  • Providing hands-on practice as well as flexibility, project exercises in Chapter 2 (Linux® Installation and Usage) allow students to install the latest Fedora™ Workstation within a virtual machine on a Windows® PC (Intel® or ARM®) or macOS® PC (Intel® or Apple® Silicon). To ensure that students can use the latest Linux® versions with the hands-on project steps in the book, a link has been added prior to the project exercises indicating a GitHub site that will contain any necessary step changes to accommodate future versions of Fedora™ Workstation.
  • Chapter 6 (Linux® Server Deployment) exercises now ask students to deploy the latest version of Ubuntu® Server within another virtual machine on a Windows® PC (Intel® or ARM®) or macOS® PC (Intel® or Apple® Silicon). For simplicity, legacy concepts will now be covered by installing the appropriate packages on modern Ubuntu® Server, instead of installing a legacy Ubuntu® Server distribution. As with Fedora™ Workstation, a GitHub site will contain any necessary step changes to accommodate future versions of Ubuntu® Server.
  • The content of Chapter 7 (Working with the Shell) has been modified to include both the BASH and Z shells, and the Git topic has been expanded to include additional commands and GitHub functionality.
  • System coverage within Chapter 8 (System Initialization, X Windows, and Localization) has been expanded to include additional configuration commands and unit files.
  • A new section on sandboxed applications has been added in Chapter 11 (Compression, System Backup, and Software Installation) to discuss Flatpak, Snap and AppImage.
  • Modern network configuration using the iproute/iproute2 package and Systemd-resolved has been added to Chapter 12 (Network Configuration).
  • Reflecting the latest developments from the field, the cloud content in Chapter 13 (Configuring Network Services and Cloud Technologies) has been revamped and expanded to include the tools used to build and test containers and microservice architecture, plus the configuration of Kubernetes.
  • The security content within Chapter 14 (Security, Troubleshooting, and Performance) has been expanded to include encryption certificate configuration, Active Directory integration, nftables, Polkit and additional SELinux configuration.
  • Appendix C (Applying Your Linux® Knowledge to macOS®) has been revamped and updated to reflect the latest versions of macOS, and a new Appendix D (Applying Your Linux® Knowledge to FreeBSD®) has been added to introduce the configuration of FreeBSD® UNIX® servers.
  • Readers gain both the conceptual knowledge and hands-on skills needed to work with Linux®. The sixth edition helps learners perfect the solid understanding and applied know-how necessary to work with several different Linux® distributions in today's network administration environment.
  • A hands-on approach builds core Linux® skills and highlights real-world experiences. Recognized for its emphasis on quality, the sixth edition offers classroom usability and an unmatched hands-on experience for today's learners. Hands-on projects carefully guide learners through the configuration of key Linux® features and technologies. Discovery exercises emphasize the realistic application of concepts as well as make theories meaningful and more than simply a list of technical features. Helpful review questions test readers' understanding of critical information to ensure understanding.
  • Exercises can be performed from a Windows® or macOS® PC using the latest Linux® distributions. Hands-on projects and discovery exercises can be performed on either a Windows® PC (Intel® or ARM®) or macOS® PC (Intel® or Apple® Silicon). To ensure that learners can use the latest Fedora™ and Ubuntu® Linux® distributions for hands-on projects, any exercise modifications needed for future versions of Fedora™ and Ubuntu® Linux® will be made available on a GitHub repository.
  • The sixth edition corresponds seamlessly to both CompTIA's Linux® and Linux Professional Institute's LPIC-1 certification exams. The sixth edition's up-to-date content and coverage of new technologies prepares learners for success on the latest Linux+ (XK0-005) certification exam, as well as the latest LPIC-1 certification exams (101-500 and 102-500).
