Overview

Living in the Environment, Fourth Canadian Edition, is designed to equip students with the inspiration and knowledge they need to make a difference solving today’s environmental issues in Canada and globally.

The text is science based, solutions oriented, and provides an interdisciplinary study of how nature works and how things in nature are interconnected. The authors present fair and balanced presentations of opposing viewpoints, advantages and disadvantages of various technologies, and proposed solutions to environmental problems without injecting personal bias, allowing students to think critically and draw their own conclusions about important environmental issues.

With over 150 illustrations, maps, and animations, the text has been designed to present complex ideas in understandable ways that relate learning to the real world. Environmental issues are looked at from both Canadian and global perspectives, from the development of Alberta’s oil sands to reactions to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Comparisons and contrasts between North America and other countries such as China, India, Brazil, Nigeria, the Netherlands, and many more continue to be an important aspect to this fourth Canadian edition.

Meet the Authors

G. Tyler Miller

G. Tyler Miller has written 65 editions of textbooks for introductory courses in environmental science, basic ecology, energy and environmental chemistry. Since 1975, his books have been among the most widely used textbooks for environmental science in the United States and throughout the world. Translated into eight languages, they have been used by more than 3 million students. Dr. Miller has a professional background in chemistry, physics and ecology. He taught college for 20 years, developed one of the nation's first environmental studies programs and created an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate science program before deciding to write environmental science textbooks full time in 1975. Now retired, Dr. Miller created Earth Education and Research, an enterprise that was devoted to improving environmental education. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and has received honorary doctoral degrees in recognition of his significant contributions to environmental education.

Dave Hackett

Dave Hackett has been teaching environmental science, ecology, and animal behaviour courses at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, for 20 years. He has been presented with the Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching, and he has been recognized in every edition of Macleans annual guide that identifies the popular professors at Canadian universities.Dave received an H.B.Sc. in Fish and Wildlife Zoology from the University of Guelph. He received an M.Sc. in Biology from Laurentian University, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Alberta. He has been involved in a wide variety of research and conservation projects in Canada spanning forest, lake, Prairie, Arctic, and alpine ecosystems. As well, for seven years, Dave was a member of a CIDA-sponsored team that was chosen to deliver environmental education to government officials and teachers on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Dave has a long-standing interest in the impact of human systems on the natural world. He is currently involved in projects evaluating human impacts on amphibians, furbearers, and loons.
