Meteorology Today: An Introduction to Weather, Climate, and the Environment 2nd Edition by C. Donald Ahrens/Peter L. Jackson/Chris Jackson

Overview

Meteorology Today, Second Canadian Edition, combines the latest in Canadian weather, climate, and Earth science research to introduce students to the atmosphere. This engaging and highly visual text shows students how to observe, calculate, and synthesize information as budding scientists, systematically analyzing meteorological concepts and issues. Specific discussions centre on severe weather systems such as tornadoes, thunderstorms, and hurricanes as well as on everyday elements such as wind, precipitation, condensation, air masses and fronts, and energy and its role in the atmosphere. Events and issues dominating today’s news cycles also receive thorough attention and include analysis of drought on the Canadian prairies, flooding in southern Alberta, changing sea ice in the Arctic, recent findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and more. Meteorology Today is a dynamic learning resource packed with self-testing features such as end-of-chapter summaries, key terms, review questions, exercises and problems that take student learning to atmospheric heights.

C. Donald Ahrens

Don Ahrens is an emeritus professor at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. He has influenced countless professionals in the field of atmospheric science as well as hundreds of thousands of students who use his books to better understand weather and climate. In 2007, the National Weather Association awarded him a lifetime achievement award for these accomplishments. The best-selling author of three Cengage texts -- METEOROLOGY TODAY, ESSENTIALS OF METEOROLOGY and EXTREME WEATHER AND CLIMATE -- Professor Ahrens received the Textbook and Academic Authors Association’s McGuffey Longevity Award for the 9th edition of METEOROLOGY TODAY. Professor Ahrens completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in meteorology at San Jose State University and his doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado.

Peter L. Jackson

Peter L. Jackson is Professor of Atmospheric Science in the Environmental Science & Engineering Programs in the Natural Resources and Environmental Studies Institute at the University of Northern British Columbia. Professor Jackson is both an academic and a trained meteorologist whose research mostly concerns windflow in complex terrain (i.e. in mountains and along coastlines) and environmental applications.

Chris Jackson

Christine Jackson is a senior laboratory instructor in the Geography Program at the University of Northern British Columbia with degrees in Physical Geography and Education. She develops, coordinates and teaches experiential labs in courses on weather and climate, geomorphology, and soils. Prior to joining UNBC she taught climatology and geomorphology at the College of New Caledonia, preceded by several years working in museum education, science and technology community development, as an educator in the school system, and as a lab demonstrator and coordinator at the University of British Columbia. She is interested in improving understanding of the natural environment through applied learning and gives workshops to train educators to do this in the school system.
  • New scientific findings and data have been incorporated such as the latest climate change information from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
  • Seven new Focus On boxes were added, four by Canadian experts on topics such as climate change and natural disasters, the 2013 Alberta floods, networks of personal weather stations and human thermal comfort.
  • Twelve new Weather Watch features have been added on topics such as the polar vortex, the use of smartphones to collect weather data, and the air quality in Beijing.
  • A new brief introductory chapter has been included to help readers use the textbook effectively. It explains how to use the Earth Systems Guides and various other textbook features that aid learning.
  • MindTap for Meteorology Today is a personalized teaching experience that brings interactivity into learning by integrating multimedia assets and assessments that measure progress and gaps in students’ understanding throughout the course. The result: increased student engagement and better student outcomes.
  • Chapter vignettes feature compelling stories at the beginning of each chapter to draw students into the discussion naturally and raise their interest in meteorology and climate change.
  • More than 80 Focus On boxes, written by renowned Canadian scientists, examine concepts at greater depth to add realistic context and meaning to meteorological observation methods, environmental issues, and a variety of more advanced topics.
  • Full-colour photographs and figures are used throughout the book to clearly show concepts and engage the reader.
  • Earth Systems Guides help indicate the linkages between chapter content and the Earth’s systems: the atmosphere, hydrosphere (including cryosphere), lithosphere, and biosphere (including anthrosphere).
  • A tear-out laminated Cloud Chart is included in the text and is intended for readers to use outdoors to aid in cloud identification.
