  • Modern Dialogue: Revised and updated dialogues reflect more contemporary names as well as changes in active vocabulary.
  • Lyrik zum Vorlesen: New poems give students practical experience working with the nuances of the language. Georg Weerth's "Die goldene Sonne" replaces Richard Demel's "Der Arbeitsmann" in Chapter 5, and Aldo von Pinelli's "Ich hab' noch einen Koffer in Berlin" is now featured in Chapter 8.
  • More Active Vocabulary: Improved organization of vocabulary lists focus on active vocabulary, while Vokabeln im Alltag sections are featured in every chapter.
  • Expanded Activities: Revised activities in all sections reflect more varied formats, giving students an assortment of ways to work with the language.
  • Lesestück: Chapter 11's "Deutschland im europäischen Haus" has been replaced with a new text on post-Wende Germany from the personal perspective of contemporary German novelist Michael Kleeberg. Additionally, Chapter 12 replaces Anna Segher's "Zwei Denkmäler" with a reading by Austrian writer Anna Mitgutsch on her longstanding engagement with America and U.S. culture.
  • Up-to-date colloquial dialogues in each chapter present models for brief, authentic communication in everyday situations, while introducing new vocabulary and structures.
  • Bound-in with the AIE, text Audio CDs offer quick access to the Dialoge (dialogs), Lyrik zum Vorlesen (poetry for reading aloud), and Lesestücke (readings) all in one convenient component.
  • Engaging, contemporary readings reflect cultural shifts within the German-speaking world and provide a window into the development of cultural identity, such as the bicultural problems facing second-generation Turkish-Germans and the irreverent humor that relates to the Viennese identity.
  • Readings as cultural capstones encourage students to make cross-cultural comparisons while challenging their ability to comprehend more sophisticated prose.
  • Lyrik zum Vorlesen (Poetry for Reading Aloud) offers an enriching way for students to practice accurate pronunciation, to discover the beauty of German as a literary language, and to engage in guided discussion using simple interpretive questions in German.
