Sexuality Now 1st Edition by Janell L. Carroll/Evelyn Field/David Aveline

Overview

With its fresh, engaging and distinctly Canadian approach, Sexuality Now: Embracing Diversity, First Canadian Edition, teaches students what they need and want to know about sexuality while clearly conveying foundational biological and health issues and citing current and classic research. The text is solidly founded in author Janell Carroll’s partnership with her students, answering the questions and concerns that students have about themselves and their sexuality with scientific fact, sensitivity, humour, and unmatched candor. The Canadian edition presents the range of sexual orientations and behaviours and takes into account the diverse social, religious, ethnic, racial, and cultural contexts of today’s students. The MindTap for Sexuality Now is an online learning environment that features an array of engaging videos of Dr. Carroll traveling to different countries and videotaping actual interviews with people regarding their take on various human sexuality research topics.

  • Sexuality Now presents the most current research of any sexuality text available, including up-to-date coverage of many relevant topics such as online social networking and gender differences in communication, new material on gay and lesbian issues, and updated information on contraception.
  • Sexual Diversity in our World feature boxes appear throughout, encouraging students to challenge their taken-for-granted assumptions about sexuality by presenting how attitudes and practices vary across and within cultures both in Canada and abroad. Topics include Chinese foot binding, transsexuality in Iran and persecution of gays and lesbians, AIDS orphans in Africa, and the qualities of good same-sex marriages.
  • The text goes beyond simply providing a foundation in the biology and psychology of sexuality, connecting with students by exploring contemporary issues, changing practices and behaviours, and their impact. Topics include increased use of tanning beds, tattooing, body and genital piercing, and pubic hair shaving and waxing.
  • "On Your Mind" questions address common questions that students are often afraid to ask. Questions are collected from the author’s students, her website, and her travels, including whether discomfort with same-sex public displays of affection is homophobic; whether the human papillomavirus (HPV) can be contracted from the HPV vaccine; why men so often wake up with erections; and whether a woman can be raped by an ex-boyfriend.
  • In addition to a wealth of relevant Canadian examples integrated throughout the narrative, "Real Research" features introduce little-known tidbits from current sexuality research with a Canadian focus. Examples include the impact of sex education programs on the behaviour of Canadian high school students, a five-year study of the health and well-being of Canadian sex workers, and a large-scale study on the sexual health of Chinese Canadian seniors.
  • "Sex in Real Life" boxes provide a "sound bite" review of current trends in sexuality research that is relevant to everyday life. These features explore a variety of topics such as sex toys, polyamory, social networking, environmental toxins and sperm production, microbicides, Internet sexual behaviour, and media use by teenagers.
  • “Animal Variations,” unique to this Canadian edition, are features that address relevant aspects of non-human sexuality such as similarities among human, chimpanzee, and bonobos monkey females in experiencing orgasm; hermaphrodites in the animal kingdom; the ways in which male stickleback fish attract females; and intimacy among animals compared to that among humans.
