SOC+ 5th Edition by Robert Brym

Overview

The meticulously updated fifth edition of SOC+ paints a vivid picture of the sociological enterprise and of Canadian and global society by interweaving examples drawn from popular culture and social media with current social issues. Written by one of Canada's leading sociologists, this edition adds extensive Canadian content, including in-depth coverage of Indigenous Canadians. It highlights theoretical controversies and research challenges so students can see how sociology is done — and for what purpose. Connections between everyday life, local communities, and national and global issues are highlighted throughout this best-selling textbook.

Robert Brym

Robert Brym (pronounced “brim”) was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, studied sociology in Canada and Israel, and received his PhD from the University of Toronto, where he is now S. D. Clark Professor of Sociology. Bob’s research focuses on the social bases of politics, social movements, and ethnic relations in Canada, Russia, and the Middle East. Bob is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has won numerous awards for his research and teaching, including the Northrop Frye Award, the British Journal of Sociology Prize, and the University of Toronto’s highest teaching honour, the President’s Teaching Award.
  • This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated with 27 new figures, 8 revised figures, and 16 new tables. Pedagogical features have been refreshed and strengthened with new material.
  • Sociology and the Media boxed features explore television, social media, movies and other media phenomena related to the chapter topics.
  • Coverage of Indigenous Canadians have been expanded throughout. Includes topics ethics of research on First Nations People, the decline and revival of Indigenous languages, and critical race theory. There is a focus on positive examples.
  • This edition puts a strong emphasis on application and testing of theory. Theory in Dispute boxed features examine how different theories interpret timely issues in different ways.
  • A new section called Research Challenges introduces students to testing theory by studying society analytically, focusing on what sociologists do, rather than a conception of what the discipline is.
  • Pop culture topics have been refreshed.
  • The Cengage Canada Teaching Advantage delivers research-based instructor resources that promote student engagement and higher-order thinking to enable the success of Canadian students and educators.
