The Canadian Writer’s Workplace, Ninth Canadian Edition, is an easy-to-use solution that aims to inspire and guide students on the road to achieving clarity in their writing. With this product, students develop paragraph- and essay-writing skills that are crucial for success in their post-secondary career and beyond. This is a three-in-one solution that includes a review of basic grammar and sentence skills, covers writing steps and strategies, and ends with a selection of readings. Purchase with MindTap, our online learning platform, to help build confidence in written communication skills between two covers.
- Among the five new readings is Leah McLaren’s piece “Not Just Hollywood,” which examines how widespread and ongoing the problem of sexual harassment of women is in the Canadian workplace.
- Another new reading is by Indigenous writer and educator Chelsea Vowel. In her piece entitled “Monster,” taken from her book Indigenous Writes: A Guide to First Nations, Metis, and Inuit Issues in Canada, Vowel discusses the issue of residential schools from the perspective of someone who was not a victim yet has been deeply affected
- Exciting new readings to the ninth edition of the textbook (in addition to those in the Reading Section) include a research paper by Marisa T. Cohen called “Social Media and Relationships: A Few Important Rules,” and an argumentative essay by former Humber College student Stephanie Rosloski, who is currently a story editor for Entertainment One in B.C., entitled “Ophelia’s Terror.”
- A brand-new feature of The Canadian Writer’s Workplace, and located toward the end of the book, is the Glossary, defining grammatical and rhetorical terms used throughout the textbook.
- Other chapters that have been enhanced include Chapter 23, “The Research Paper,” which now addresses the term “fake news” and how to identify the problem. The same chapter also looks at a recent example of plagiarism in the workplace that led to dire consequences.
- Chapter 20, “The Essay,” now includes a sample preliminary essay that is documented in APA format and that includes a three-point thesis statement.
- The 2019 updates from the American Psychological Association (APA) have been updated and reflected within the text and eBook.
- We have updated content and exercises to address the use of “they” as a singular, gender-neutral pronoun.
- The format allows for flexibility that enables both instructors and students to work through the areas they need to focus on.
- Practice exercises have the answers in the back of the text, so students can continue to work through independently.
- Additional exercises are found throughout the text, but answers are not provided within the text—only within the Instructors’ Manual. This allows instructors to have even more opportunities for their students to practice.
- Working Together are group work activities found at the end of every chapter in the text.
- Questions for Analysis follow each model essay in the Writing Strategies unit. This provides students with the opportunities to further reflect and digest what they have previously learned.
- For each of the rhetorical modes or writing strategies, there are assignments provided. Listed are several topics related to the chapter and encourage the student to practice their writing skills.
- Quick Quiz is found in each chapter in Unit 1 and assesses students’ skills in the material of that chapter. Based on their results, more review and practice may be needed, allowing students to focus their efforts.
- All the readings in Unit 5 are by Canadian authors and were selected to inspire and motive students to be better writers. Four questions follow each of the readings, designed to foster further understanding and appreciation for each of the readings.
