The Challenge of Democracy: American Government in Global Politics, Enhanced 14th Edition by Kenneth Janda/Jeffrey M. Berry/Jerry Goldman/Paul Manna

Overview

THE CHALLENGE OF DEMOCRACY: AMERICAN GOVERNMENT IN GLOBAL POLITICS, ENHANCED, 14th edition, explores globalization's impact on U.S. politics and the clash of values surrounding freedom, order and equality. Extensively updated -- including coverage of the 2018 midterm election -- the text is packed with all-new examples, art and data. An increased focus on recent political developments includes expanded coverage of gay marriage, marijuana legalization, government surveillance, the impact of social media on political activity, gun control, immigration politics and more. Additionally it continues the theme focusing on the tensions between pluralist and majoritarian visions of democracy. Also available, the MindTap digital learning solution equips students with a fully interactive ebook, automatically graded homework assignments, flashcards, online discussion boards and self-assessment tools.

  • Features discussion of the Trump presidency to date, as well as 2018 midterm election coverage and results.
  • An all-new "#ChallengeAccepted" feature opens every chapter and asks students to consider a current topic related to the concepts being discussed. Each "challenge" ends with a critical-thinking question that deepens student engagement with the themes developed in the vignette. An accompanying challenge in MindTap is also included for each.
  • Connecting current, real-world issues to the text's enduring themes, this edition provides an increased focus on recent political developments, including gay marriage, marijuana legalization, government surveillance, the impact of social media on political activity, gun control, immigration politics, education policy, net neutrality, campaign finance, and more.
  • Bringing chapter concepts to life, the Enhanced 14th edition is packed with new art and all images are now numbered--enhancing navigation in both the print and digital versions of the text.
  • THE CHALLENGE OF DEMOCRACY is available with MindTap, the online learning solution that equips students with a fully interactive ebook, automatically graded homework assignments, flashcards, online discussion boards and self-assessment tools. • Continuing the text's emphasis on the theme of "Freedom, Order or Equality," a feature in each chapter highlights the tensions among these values and connects them to chapter concepts. Features offer insight into the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, the Black Lives Matter movement, the conservative movement, and much more.
  • Each chapter includes a "Critical Thinking in Global Politics" feature that puts political issues in their international context.
  • The 14th edition continues the theme focusing on the tensions between pluralist and majoritarian visions of democracy. Ensuring thorough student understanding, these models illustrate the dynamics of the American political system, including rising partisanship in Congress, the role of interest groups in policymaking, the ways in which public opinion does (or does not) shape public policy and the influence of money on a range of political processes.
  • Maximizing study time, clearly defined learning outcomes are tightly integrated into each chapter to increase student comprehension and preparedness. Major chapter topics are organized around the numbered outcomes. Chapter summaries and review questions are correlated to the outcomes, which are reiterated in the summary and end-of-chapter quiz.
  • Throughout the text, every vignette and feature ends with critical-thinking questions to promote consideration of the implications of the topic at hand.
